John Calvin Spates

John C. Spates, 82, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2011. John was born to Howard and Lillian Spates on September 10, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by his loving wife, Ineko (Susie) Spates of 60 years, his children: Joseph & Elizabeth Spates, Howard & Rhonda Spates, Robert & Joyce Spates, Susan & Michael Polson and Maria & Bruce Bennett; 14 grandchildren: Michelle, Eric, Nicole, John-Michael, Chris, Cole, Tyler, Kaylee, Max, T.J., Amanda, Garren, Brodrick and Cassidy; 10 great-grandchildren; Brandon, Jade, Trinity, Braedon, Mikayla, Ava, Jacob, Brendon, Layla, and Hayden; 5 siblings: William Spates, Robert & Dolores Spates, James & Barbara Jean Spates, Louise & Joe Milne and Jeannie & Frank Boccabella; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father & mother Howard & Lillian Spates, his brother Joseph Spates, and sisters: Mary Montesano, Catherine Staats, Margaret Spates, and Anna Mae Spates. He served his country in the United States Army and retired at Ft. Bliss in 1969, after serving 24 years. John was very active in the bowling community at Ft. Bliss. He was past President of El Paso Men’s Bowling Association and was inducted into the El Paso Bowling Hall of Fame in 1998. He was most proud of the Ft. Bliss Center Lanes, of which he helped establish. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Vigil/Rosary at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home, 4631 Hondo Pass, El Paso, Tx 79904, 915-755-4494. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment to follow at 11:00 am at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
