Jane Hammond

April 30, 1933 — July 4, 2009

Jane Hardwick Hammond, 76, born April 30, 1933, in Rochester, Minnesota, to Dr. Robert S. and Dorothy B. Hardwick, died in El Paso on July 4, 2009, after a thirteen-month battle with pancreatic cancer. From age 14 she enjoyed singing as a soprano soloist in many different churches. Jane graduated from high school in Longview, Texas and received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Music from the University of Texas, Austin, where she was elected to Mu Phi Epsilon, honorary music fraternity, and Chi Omega sorority. She has resided in El Paso since 1957, and served as charter teacher of St. Clement’s Episcopal Parish School, and soprano soloist at the Church of St. Clement for several years. She was president of the MacDowell Club and served as a board member of several organizations, including the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, The Junior League of El Paso, which twice named her Sustaining Member of the Year, and the Pan American Round Table. She served on the boards of the Santa Fe Opera Guild and The Metropolitan Opera National Council. She was a founder and past president of the Texas Lawyer’s Auxiliary. Jane was on the founding Board of El Paso Pro Musica, of which she was an enthusiastic supporter until her death. One of her most enjoyable endeavors was as co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 48. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Joseph P. Hammond, her daughter, Molly J. Hammond, of Houston. Her brother. Robert W. Hardwick, of Longview, and her loyal friend Emilia Sosa of El Paso. She is predeceased by her brother John Hardwick in 1996. Jane’s family expresses its gratitude to Becky Horowitz of V.N.A. Hospice, Pauline Prince of Elite Elderly Care, and their several loving care givers, all of whom were so kind to Jane. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Saint Clement at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 7th, conducted by the Rev. Bill Francis of St. Clement’s and the Rev. Jeff Lambert of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. Remains will be interred at a private family service.
