James David Pope, Jim or Jimmy to most, was born in Monahans, Texas on November 2, 1949, to Jimmie Sue and T. D. Pope. He passed from this life on December 28, 2023 in Dell City, Texas.
On November 2, 2004, he married Bennie Earlene Bowden and with that marriage, he became Dad to her daughter Robin and later would take on the title of Papa (his favorite title of all) to her four beautiful children, Letty, Enzo, Oliver and Gray.
Jimmy, the oldest of three children, was an avid reader, historian, philopher, orator, and music-lover. He also had a great affection for one very fast Plymouth Barracuda. A graduate of Angelo State University, he began his career as a public-school teacher, teaching history in middle school. He later found his niche selling and repairing heavy farm and ranch equipment, then a linesman repairing electric lines, and at the time of his death, as an employee of Hudspeth County, maintaining the county roads. A strong work-ethic was in his DNA and during his recent hospital stays, would constantly ask his doctors “When can I get back to work?”.
He will be greatly missed, and his memory cherished by his mother, Jimmy Sue Pope of San Angelo; his wife, Bennie Earlene Pope of Dell City; his brother, B.J. Pope and wife Terri of Gardendale; sister Rebecca Bilyeu and husband Denver of Odessa; and his best friend of all time, John Plumlee of Dallas. Also, his stepdaughter, Robin Koontz and husband Tyler of El Paso, their three children; as well as two nephews and their families; one precious aunt, a myriad of cousins and a multitude of friends.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Dell City at 10:00 AM, January 4, 2024. A celebration of life and the internment of ashes will be held in Miles, Texas at a later date.
