James Walter Mattox passed away Tuesday, April 5th, 2022, at the age of 84. Jim was born in 1938 in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, to father, Walter, mother, Nellie, and big sister Betty. Jim died peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Jim served 20 years in the U.S. Army. Honorably served tours in Germany, Vietnam, Okinawa, Korea, then retired at Fort Bliss, Texas. After retiring from the Army, Jim became a long-haul truck driver for 31 years, working for Elbar, TSI, and Herman Miles. Jim also received an award for one million miles with no accidents from Elbar, which is a rare accomplishment in the truck driving industry.
Jim was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Lorraine Mattox, of 43 years and an amazing father to his children, Billy Word (Manuela), Amie Mattox, Barbara Furan (Matthew), and Tony Word (Erika). Jim also leaves behind grandchildren Eric (Kayla), Roxanne (David), Steve, Kelsey, Chelsey, Joshua (Bethany), Christina (Matthew), Victoria, Melanie, Andrew, Vivian; great-grandchildren Kent, Lexie, Macey, Allison, Elijah, and baby Milani on the way.
He had a way of playing jokes on all his children and grandchildren. He was handsome and he knew it, with his beautiful hazel eyes, Elvis sideburns, and sly grin. He will be forever in our hearts and thoughts. Jim will be joining his father, mother, sister, and granddaughter Danielle.
