James Edward Johnson (JJ) was born in Huntersville, North Carolina June 17, 1935 to the late Edward Johnson and Georgia Mae Alexander. His father died shortly after James was born and he was raised by his uncle and aunt Albert K. and Annie Johnson. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age with membership at St Phillips Missionary Baptist Church, Huntersville, North Carolina
James enlisted into the United States Army in 1954. James served his country for over 25 years. During his military career he was promoted to the rank of Command Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank in the United States Army. While in the military he served two tours of duty in Vietnam, as well as tours of duty at other military instillations around the world. He received numerous awards and metals including a Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Metal (several) and the Second Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired in 1984 at Ft Bliss Texas.
On September 4, 2015 James Edward Johnson entered full eternal life. He will be missed. His mother, Georgia Alexander, his oldest sister Helen Cook, and a younger sister Hope Outz preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his loving and spirit-filled memory his wife Lillie, his daughter Lori Jovay Johnson, his sister Vernetta Wallace Rockville, Maryland; Nephews; Robin Cook (Tina) Silver Springs, Maryland, Ricardo Cook, Huntersville, North Carolina; Percy Alexander(Paula) Laural, Maryland; Curtis Wallace, Silver Springs, Maryland and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00 on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home-East. Funeral Service will be at 12:00pm on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
