James “Jim” Douglas Moreland, 74, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2016. Raised in Mt. Storm, West Virginia, Jim graduated from Bayard High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University, and his master’s degree from Webster University.
A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, Jim served from 1965 to 1988 on various assignments throughout the world, including the Vietnam War. His awards include the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with Valor, a Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, along with numerous others.
Jim loved to travel with his wife and enjoyed outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing, and played basketball to the junior college level. Jim’s sense of duty for his country, his friends, and his family was remarkable. He will be remembered for all of these.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Wanda Moreland, brother Richard Moreland, sister Carolyn Lower, children Janice Braswell and Michael Alexander, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A Gathering of Remembrance begins 9am Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home located at 4631 Hondo Pass.
