Hugh L. Silkwood

January 15, 1923 — October 25, 2010

Hugh L. Silkwood, CW4 U.S. Army (RET) passed away on October 25, 2010 at the age of 87. He was a long time El Paso resident. During his youth he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps at the camp in Ripley County, MO. Hugh entered the Army in January 1943, as a member of the 38th Infantry Division, he participated in the campaigns of New Guinea, and the liberation of the Philippines. He went on to complete a 30 year career with assignments in Europe, Korea, Panama, Vietnam and numerous stateside posts. He retired in June 1973 from his last assignment as Chief, Enlisted Records Branch of the U. S. Army Air Defense School at Fort Bliss. Hugh and his wife Margaret enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling and spending time with family. He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Cheryl, Alexandra, VA, son Mark (Lola), Houston, Tx. Granddaughters Sara Phillips, Alexandria, VA and Eva Baker, Arlington, VA. Sisters Merle Henning, Rock Island, IL., Joann Bell, Poplar Bluff, MO. and Shirley Wells ( Harrison), Key West, FL. Visitiation will be from 6:00-9:00 pm, Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Homes. Committal Service will be at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
