Herbert "Herb" Carel Piel Jr.

November 23, 1965 — February 21, 2025

Herbert “Herb” Carel Piel Jr., age 59, entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 21, 2025, in El Paso, Texas. A remarkable man, Herb was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend who left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His absence will be deeply felt.

Herb’s unwavering faith in God, kindness, and generosity made him a true friend, a source of support, and an inspiration to many. He was known for his hard work, wisdom, and sense of humor.

As a highly respected sign language interpreter, Herb dedicated his career to ensuring the Deaf community had the resources they needed. He often went above and beyond to secure an interpreter for anyone in need and was loved by his colleagues and students. In addition to his interpreting work, Herb served many years with the New Mexico Department of Health. His warmth, humility, and eagerness to help others brightened the lives of countless individuals. A brother to many, he formed deep and lasting friendships, sharing laughter, tears, and meaningful conversations with those around him. His presence was like a bright light in a dark room—undeniably felt and cherished.

Outside of his work, Herb was a man of many passions. He loved motorcycles, the freedom of the open road, and the thrill of flying as a private pilot. He was a great storyteller, a giver of wise counsel, and a man who never wavered in his faith. He finished the race and fought the good fight, knowing that his reward was in heaven.

Here on earth, Herb’s greatest joy was his family. He made sure his wife and children were always loved, supported, and cared for. He cherished moments with his kids, whether it was playing frisbee or football when they were young or guiding them through life’s milestones as they grew—sending his daughters to college, supporting his son’s pursuit of aviation, and blessing their weddings. As a grandfather, his love only deepened. He made it a point to call his grandchildren every day, asking about their lives and treasuring every minute spent together.

Herb is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Carel Piel and Mary Socorro Piel, and his beloved granddaughter, Anya Piel. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Priscilla Piel; his children, Evelyn Christina Piel, Herbert Carel Piel III (Nayomy), and Samantha Mudd (Jon); and his cherished grandchildren, Eivah Piel, Ana Piel, Ian Piel, and Asher Piel. He also leaves behind many dear friends and extended family members who will continue to honor his memory and legacy.

Revelation 4 gives us a glimpse of the glorious throne room of God—a place of unimaginable beauty, filled with the Lord’s brilliant light, where worship and joy never cease. In heaven, there is no more pain and no more sorrow. Herb now stands in the eternal presence of the Lord, whole and at peace, joining the heavenly chorus in praise. Though our hearts grieve, we take comfort in knowing that he is home, welcomed into the presence of the Almighty through the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
