After a full life and surrounded by family, Gretel Sanders passed away on October 24, 2023 at age 88. To the very end, she lit up the room with her joy, her infectious laugh and her playfulness. Gretel’s warmth combined with a little bit of mischief, a fierce competitive streak and unfiltered opinions to make her simply the most fun.
She had three children, Randal, Brenda and Damon, during her marriage to Gary Crossland. She was a devoted, proud and loving mom who then became Grammy to her five very lucky grandchildren. She was an unbelievable grandmother, giving everyone permission to be silly and, most of all, giving her full attention and palpable love.
Gretel was endlessly capable and adventurous. She loved the outdoors and sports, camping often and playing tennis throughout her adult life. She made many wonderful friends on the tennis court, including her dear friend Michelle Quinn Armendariz, who would become like family.
Gretel was a loyal friend to all who knew her, always lending a hand or knowing when someone needed a visit. She was easy to talk to and a comfort to be around. She will be missed for so many reasons, but perhaps most of all for the way she could make everyone feel seen and cared for. Knowing her was a gift.
Gretel is survived by her children; Randal Crossland (Elvia), Brenda Schmit (Bob) and Damon Crossland (Janice); her 6 nieces and 4 nephews; her grandchildren McKinzey Saig (Mike), Stephen Crossland (Kimberly), Taylor Crossland, Ashley Crossland (Chris) and Austin Crossland; and her four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Gretel’s memory with a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association West Texas Chapter, the Humane Society of El Paso or a cause close to your heart.
