Glen Thomas Gattis, 79, passed away on Friday, 9/13/2024, in El Paso, Texas. He was a patriot, grandfather, father, brother, son, and friend. He loved helping his family members and friends in whatever was needed. He was a good man and will be missed.
Early Life
Glen was born in Mobile, Alabama on 5/1/1945. After graduating from high school, he served his country proudly and honorably in the United States Air Force (USAF).
Later Years
After the USAF, Glen worked with several private contractors on government projects and traveled around the world. For a significant portion of his career, he worked at White Sands Missile Range. Then, in his sixties into his seventies, he served his country once again in the employment of the United States Postal Service (USPS). He also obtained a computer science degree in his sixties. He was a devoted Alabama Crimson Tide football fan. He returned to his birthplace and worked there for USPS from 2005 to 2008. Then, he came back to El Paso, Texas. He loved golfing and solving problems from mechanical to mathematical, theoretical and hands-on, and everything in between.
Preceded in death
Glen was preceded in death by his wife Cresencia Juanitas Gattis (DOB 8/15/1941; DOD 5/24/2014). They met in the Philippines where their son, Richard, was born. Glen brought them to America in 1979.
Glen was preceded in death by his oldest sibling James Darrell Gattis (DOB 5/31/1943; DOD 6/27/1980). Darrell also proudly and honorably served our country in the United States Navy.
Glen was also preceded in death by his parents: James Thomas Gattis (DOB 4/17/1917; DOD 8/23/1961) and Bernice Mildred Maples (DOB 9/27/1920; DOD 1/29/1998) and by grandparents: 1) Kode Lee Gattis (DOB 4/23/1892; DOD February 1984) and Lillie Mae Langley (DOB April 1898; DOD 1929) (James’s parents); and 2) James Allen Maples (DOB 11/27/1872; DOD 7/20/1927) and Rachel Evelyn Caton (DOB 8/10/1894; DOD 2/17/1981) (Bernice’s parents).
Most of Glen’s ancestors came primarily from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. They settled in Alabama, Delaware, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. Glen also had French, Dutch, German, and Native American in his ancestry.
Survived by
Glen is survived by daughter Carol Yeager, son Richard Gattis, daughter-in-law Irene Gattis, and grandson Glen Gerardo Gattis. He is survived by siblings Gerald Gattis (spouse Susan), Jewel Gattis, and June Brewer (spouse Doug). He is survived by niece Rachel Carter (spouse Chris), nephew Hunter Gattis (spouse Chandler), and nephew Travis Brewer. He is survived by step-nephews Adam Guess (spouse Erin) and Grant Guess.
Funeral Service Time
A service and burial will be held on October 11, 2024 at 1:30pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.
