Gilbert August Mapp was born in Gamboa, Panama, a small town along the Panama Canal on July 19, 1935. As a teenager, he worked as a gardener and trained birds that he sold to tourists. At 20 years old he joined the United States Army having, as he would later say, “nothing better to do” and immigrated to the United States where he would decide to make El Paso, TX his permanent home. On January 9, 1956, Gilbert became an American citizen. The same year he met Gwendolyn who would be become his wife on August 17, gaining a son, Michael and a daughter, Vera. Gilbert served 23 years in the Army before retiring and returning to El Paso, where his daughters, Deadra and Roberta would be raised.
On his homegoing Gilbert will be reunited with his mother, Olga, his brother, Ernest, his daughter, Vera and his grandsons, Ernest and Devante. We need not mourn for a joyous reunion has surely ensued. While remaining Earthside are his wife, Gwendolyn, son, Michael, and daughters, Deadra and Roberta. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren: Tierekke, Maurice, Nikkita, Rhea, Keith, Cekiesha, Brittany, De’Andre, and Milton as well as 21 great grandchildren.
