Geraldine Theresa Dixon Hayes
Geraldine Hayes was born in Philadelphia.
She was called to Heaven on May 8th, 2024, at the age of 83 and died peacefully of natural causes.
She married James Anthony Hayes on September 16th, 1961, in Philadelphia, and accompanied him on a duty tour of West Germany, and then at home in the States while he was on active duty in Viet Nam. She moved to El Paso, Texas in 1968, which would become her home until her passing.
She graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a degree in Education and continued her work to receive a Master’s Degree in 1985. She was certified by the Texas Education System in July 1984 and taught at the elementary and junior high school level in the Ysleta Independent School District. She retired from public education after 13 years. Not done with her calling, she proceeded to teach an additional 3 years at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School.
She was active in retired life, becoming President of her neighborhood association, going to the gym, continuing work with the Church, and crocheting. She followed her dream to travel, going to the Caribbean, Alaska, France, and the birthplace of her ancestors in Ireland. She actively followed the UTEP Miners, Dallas Cowboys, Nashville Predators, and Oklahoma City Thunder. Her passion was to gather and donate stuffed animals to disabled and disadvantaged children.
She is preceded in death by her husband James, son Duane Hayes, sisters Carol and Bernadette, and her brother Robert. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Dixon, sons, Patrick and Leonard, two grandchildren, Erin Eileen Hayes and Kevin Scott, and the hundreds of students whose lives she help shaped.
