George was born in Monahans, Texas on Jun 12, 1951, to Adelina Valdez Calanche and Febronio Calanche who preceded him in death. He was the fourth child of seven children. George attended El Paso schools until 1968. He got married young (first marriage) and had a son George Calanche Jr, and then left to serve his country proudly in the United States Army. He went to basic training in Oklahoma. During his time in the United States Army, he was assigned to Field Artillery, where most of the service was performed overseas in Germany and Turkey and White Sands Missile Range. He married Delia Calanche, the love of his life in 1993. He retired from military service in 1995 and made El Paso his home. His military education consisted of: Chemical Biological and Radiological, Atomic Projectile Pre-fire Assembler, and in Battalion Training Management System. He attended multiple Noncommissioned Officer Courses; PNCO, BNCO, ANOC Course. During his military service, he was inducted into the order of Saint Barbara. Received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar. In 1995 he attended the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Academy in Beeville, Texas and graduated in 1996 as a Correctional Officer. In 2013 he was diagnosed with Cancer and remained in Remission until his passing in 2024. He received numerous awards, two (2) of them being proclamations from the Senate and Congressional bodies from Austin, Texas. He was a Spanish translator, trauma officer and volunteered with the special Olympics for multiple years. George retired in 2015 from corrections, this was his second retirement.
George loved his wife, family, and cats. He enjoyed drinking coffee and running. He was a Caring and Considerate man. He had faith in Christ, True Son of God, and a Loving husband. He will be deeply missed. Amen!
George leaves behind to cherish his memory Maria Delia Calanche, George Calanche (Guadalupe), Rafael Cortez, Patricia Sanchez (John), Linda Montes (Bobbie), Alicia Calanche, Sylvia Calanche, Ruben Valdez, Cheyenne Justice, Jacob Cortez, Jessica Cortez, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00pm with a Vigil/Rosary to begin at 6:30pm on Wednesday April 10, 2024 at Sunset Funeral Home – Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass Dr. Funeral Service will begin at 10:00am on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Apollo Heights Baptist Church, 10450 Kenworthy St. Memorial Service to follow at 11:30am on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson AveWednesday, April 10, 2024
