Genevieve Olfers

Genevieve F. Olfers passed away on Dec. 29, 2008 at age 90. She was born on Oct. 5, 1918 in El Paso, Texas, and grew up there with her brother Leonard Pence, Jr. She married Theodore W. Olfers from Fredericksburg, Texas in 1939, in El Paso, and had a daughter, Barbara Jeanne, in 1942. She had worked at Warner Drug Co. and then at the office of Mumsen, Dunnigan, and Ryan. She then was employed by the El Paso Public School District, working in the bookroom at Burges High, then as Senior Office Clerk at Bonham and Ben Milam Elem. Schools. She served as P.T.A. President four times at Hillside Elem. School, and was a Girl Scout Leader for several years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as Music Librarian as well as being ordained as a Deacon and an Elder. Both Gen and Ted sang in the Chancel Choir, and chaperoned the Youth Choir on trips. This enabled them to enjoy trips to many countries. They both also enjoyed attending UTEP football and basketball games. Gen's hobby was crocheting, providing friends and relatives with afghans. She and Ted moved into White Acres Retirement Home six years ago. She was preceded in death by Ted, who passed away three years ago. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Cofer, grandchildren, Christy, Grady, and Cheralyn Cofer, and great-grandchildren Olivia Mooney and Flora Cofer, all of California. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home-West, Chapel of Peace. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church.
