Gary Edward Barnes of El Paso, Texas passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010. He was an amazing, gentle man. Born August 15, 1957 in El Paso, Texas as one of seven children of Grady L. and Trinidad Virginia Perez Barnes, he grew up in a military family and upon the retirement of his father made his home in El Paso. Gary was the Chess champion for the City of El Paso representing Irvin High School where he graduated from in May of 1975. He attended Texas Tech University and was the Rush Chairman for Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He also attended UTEP. Gary was active in his community where he served as an Usher for Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a blood donor to the American Red Cross. His hobbies included Astronomy, Meteorology, hiking to the Organ Mountains and was an avid reader. He is survived by his parents, Grady and Virginia, his sisters Patricia Denton, and Katherine Scales; brothers David Barnes, Daniel Barnes; Robert Barnes and John Barnes; their spouses, James Denton, James Scales, Becky Barnes, Jane Barnes, and Shelly Barnes; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews who were dear to him, as well as his special great nephew baby Luke. Gary was a man of great faith who sought the Lord for direction. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 9:00 pm on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast. Funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 am on Monday, March 15, 2010 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
