Following his retirement from racing, he attended welding school and later designed and built his own home. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, he loved football and music but especially dancing with his best girl, Connie Jo. He had a wicked sense of humor and often used it to keep his grandchildren spellbound with his bright blue eyes as he told them his funny stories.
