Fred Sunderman, 76 of El Paso passed away Monday, September 12, 2022. Visitation (5 -8 pm) and Rosary (6 pm) will be held September 19, 2022 at Sunset Funeral Home at 4631 Hondo Pass. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated September 20, 2022 at Christ the Savior Church at 10 am at 5301 Wadsworth with internment with military honors to be held at a later date at the Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso.
Fred was born November 3, 1945 in New York City, NY to Frederick and Cecilia (Dvorschak) Sunderman. He graduated from MMI Prep School in Freeland, Pennsylvania and attended University of Scranton on an ROTC scholarship and graduated with a BS. Upon his college graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served honorably for six years, including a promotion to captain and a tour in Viet Nam. Fred married Susanna Opert in 1967, and upon completion of his Army service, embarked upon a 30-year civilian career at White Sands Missile Range.
Fred and Susie settled in northeast El Paso, where they were active in their sons’ education and activities. Fred was a lifelong Catholic and raised his sons in the church, setting an example of Christian marriage and parenting and supporting them through their respective college educations and careers.
Fred enjoyed many hobbies including auto racing, model railroading, and road trips with his beloved wife. Together they made trips across the southwestern U.S., his childhood homes of New York and northeast Pennsylvania, and numerous trips to visit their grandchildren.
Fred is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susanna Sunderman; sons Frederick and wife Kimberly of Spring, Texas, and Christopher and wife Elizabeth of Mansfield, Texas; grandchildren Ryan Sunderman, Courageous Sunderman, and Chastity Sunderman; brother Stephen Sunderman and wife Marion of Freeland, Pennsylvania and his extended family members including sisters and brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donation be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society.
