FRED “BIG VIKING” BENITO LUCERO was born April 3, 1937 in Las Vegas, NM., passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in El Paso, TX at the age of 81 after a short illness. Fred had a larger than life personality, never met a stranger, had friends all over the US and Mexico. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Lucero and Olympia Sena Lucero, brothers, Victor, Leandro, Horace, Pete, Benny, Herman, and sisters Mela and Connie. Fred is survived by his wife of 43 years, D’Aun Lucero, children Stacy Lorenz, Freddie Lucero, Samra Hill, Paul Rush, Lynette Gonzales and Vickie Lucero, his younger brother Julian Lucero, grandchildren Trevor Nuckols, Jon Paul Lorenz, Eric and Taner Hill, Sierra Dannelley, Seiko Manning, Amaile and Madeline Gonzales, son-in-laws; Jonathan Lorenz and Michael Gonzales and ten great-grandchildren. Fred is a true western cattleman and horseman and founder of the Viking Roping Cattle Company crossing Mexican corriente steer from the ranches in Mexico across the border for use in team roping all over the US. He also raised fine quarter horses for team roping and barrel racing sired by Cee Booger Red. Fred was a champion calf roper and team roper and taught hundreds of people to team rope in his lifetime. You can guarantee the big Viking will be heeling at that champion team roping in heaven. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 5:00PM to 9:00PM at Sunset Funeral Home-West.
