Frank R. Monzon

Frank R. Monzon of El Paso, Texas passed away on March 13, 2011, at the age of 66. The son of Alfredo U. Monzon and Emelia S. Saldivar-Monzon, Frank was born in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1944. His family immigrated to the United States in the early 1950's. As a young boy, Frank worked as a shoe shine boy in El Paso's 2nd ward, where he gained a strong work ethic that continued throughout his life. After graduating from Bowie High School, he entered the Job Corps, where he studied to work in the medical field. He enjoyed running marathons and playing baseball, and was a faithful member of the Catholic Church. Frank proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1988. During his military service he worked in various fields, including twelve years as a Medical N.C.O. His dedication and bravery during the Vietnam War earned him many honors and medals, including the Combat Infantry Badge. He honorably retired from duty as a Staff Sergeant. Frank understood the value of education, which inspired him to earn several degrees, including a Master's in Human Resources. Upon retiring from the Army, he continued to work with veterans at the American GI Forum, helping them to succeed through education and employment. He also continued to work as a licensed barber in local barber shops, a trade he learned as a young man. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rudy Monzon. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maria T. Monzon; daughter Sandra Monzon; son Alfredo R. Monzon, Sr. and his wife Darla; two grandchildren: Alfredo R. Monzon, Jr. and Jessica Avery Runnels; sister Lourdes Acuña; nieces Maria Padilla and Elena Liggens; and brother José Monzon; as well as other family members and his beloved dogs. Visitation will be held from 5-9pm with a Vigil/Rosary to begin at 7pm, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Mass will begin at 9am, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Services Entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home Northeast.
