Frank Thomas James

November 24, 1945 — November 26, 2023

Santa Teresa

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Frank Thomas James, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, sibling, entrepreneur, and friend, who left us peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Frank, known for his vibrant spirit and a heart full of love, brought joy and laughter to all who knew him.

Born and raised in El Paso, Frank attended Irvin High School, where he made lifelong friends and forged a lifetime commitment to the school through his work organizing reunions and supporting scholarships. The school later recognized him as an Outstanding Alumnus. After graduation, Frank's academic journey led him to Northwestern University, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. That was followed by distinguished service in the United States Navy. After graduating from officer training, he became an Ensign in the Seabees and served two tours in Vietnam, embodying courage and dedication.

Upon returning to El Paso, he worked as chief estimator for Jordan and Nobles Construction Company while attaining a Master’s degree in business at UTEP. He left their employ to establish and successfully run F.T. James Construction for 41 years. His work dramatically shaped El Paso's skyline, leaving a lasting legacy in the city he loved. Overall, his company built over 300 projects, including hotels, banks, schools, medical and retail spaces, churches, and various city projects that are a testament to his experience and dedication to the El Paso community.

Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Frank was an avid car enthusiast and adventurer. His love for cars and the thrill of exploration were a testament to his vibrant spirit. A true sports enthusiast as well, he enjoyed both watching and participating in various sports, mainly tennis and golf, finding joy and camaraderie in the bonds he formed. Frank was also a dedicated Chicago fan who made sure to root for the Bears, White Sox, and Cubs every chance he got. He lived his life with an infectious enthusiasm, embracing every opportunity to explore and experience new things.

Frank's life was a story of dedication, hard work, and an unwavering love for his city and family. As we say goodbye, we remember the laughter, wisdom, and strength he shared so freely. Although his achievements are vast and diverse, his most beloved and cherished accomplishment was his family, and his legacy will live on through them. His warm presence and kind soul will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate to cross paths with him.

Frank Thomas James was a generous man who loved his family and the El Paso community. During his lifetime, he donated to more than two dozen organizations supporting diverse causes. These included organizations dedicated to the young, the elderly, and the pigs at his beloved sanctuary, Ironwood.

In lieu of flowers, we invite you to honor his memory in a special way. We believe that Frank’s memory and generosity should live on in a foundation that will be created in his name. Any donations made to this memorial fund will go directly to the Frank T. James Foundation and will be used to support the cause that was always near to his heart: the underdog.

Frank’s family thanks you for your kindness and consideration during this difficult time, and we mourn with those who called him a friend. Donations can be made to the memorial fund via Everloved.com.
