Fr. Fidel Cervantes

Fr. Fidel Cervantes, 91, Franciscan priest, Diocesan priest and faithful servant of God went to his eternal rest on December 12, 2023, the feast day of our lady of Guadalupe to whom he had a great life time of devotion. Father was born on February 19, 1932 in Galeana, Michoacan, Mexico and became interested in the Franciscan order at a very early age, at age 16, he began extensive studies of philosophy and theology and was ordained to the priesthood at age 22. Later he took many additional studies in Rome where he was certified as a professor of biblical theology. Father served for over twenty years at Roger Bacon Franciscan college preparing young men for the priesthood. He then joined the El Paso Diocese where he ministered at the local hospitals, Fort Bliss, and the local and federal prison. Father also cared many years for his mentally challenged niece until her death in 2019. He had promised her mother, on her deathbed, that he would, and he kept the promise even at great personal expense. Father touched many lives in El Paso and is loved by many.

A special acknowledgement and many thanks to his long-time caregiver, Irma Gonzalez, Dr. Paul D. Cooney, Dr. Richard Anaya, and the Cooney family for their loving care for so many years.

Visitation 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with Vigil/Rosary at 6:00 PM, Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Homes- East, 750 N. Carolina. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Roger Bacon Church, 2400 Marr. Interment will follow at 12:00 PM at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
