Ernesto J. Mariani born November 17, 1942, passed away on June 13, 2013 at the age of 70. He was born in Raton, N.M. and moved to El Paso while serving in the United States Army at Fort Bliss. He proudly served for 21 years and retired in 1981. A Vietnam veteran and academic pioneer, he was among the first graduating class at Fort Bragg to teach race relations to soldiers in the military. He believed in equality and respect amongst all soldiers in the military (as well as in life.) After his retirement he pursued his dream of owning his own business and in 1985 he opened the Copper Penny cocktail lounge. After many successful years filled with great times and lasting memories he sold his business and returned to school. He attended El Paso Community College where he earned a degree in Applied Sciences. His hard work and outstanding achievements earned him recognition amongst the “Who’s Who in America.” He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 47 years Beatrice (Lorraine) Mariani and his 3 daughters Trixi-Marie Phal, Barbara Ann Mariani, and Maria Mariani Fernandez and husband Rogelio Fernandez Sr. As well as 7 grandchildren Ernestine Mariani, Axel Phal, Javier Gutierrez Jr., Maximilian Phal, Rogelio Fernandez Jr, Angelique Fernandez, Solon John Paul Wren, and great grand daughter Angeline Escajeda. Sister-in-law Barbara Duran and husband LeRoy. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and many other loving extended family and friends. Ernie was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandpa and uncle whose strength was always and inspiration to everyone who knew him. Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 am, Friday, June 21, 2013 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
