Emma Mora, a lifelong resident of El Paso, passed away Sunday, one month after celebrating her 90th birthday. Emma was the daughter of Charles and Esther De Smeth. By remaining in El Paso her entire life, Emma was able to form wonderful lifelong friendships-- many of which spanned more than 80 years. Emma was an athlete in high school, playing basketball with the Pistol Packers. She later was a member of Gala Girls social club, perfecting her jitterbug and always had a full dance card. Her love of music and dancing provided her much joy and opportunities to meet others. This sparked in her the gift of hospitality. She treasured cooking delicious meals and entertaining friends and family. Emma married Joe Mora in 1949. As a young wife and mother, Emma continued her love of books, music, and theatre-- sharing this love of learning with her five children. An avid outdoors woman and nature lover, she set up camp for her family campouts and loved spending time in Ruidoso and traveling. Her favorite days were spent with her nine grandchildren in laughter and play. She was the ultimate mom, unselfish and courageous. Her kitchen was magic, as she prepared incredible meals with such ease and flair. Always welcoming and hospitable, strong and fierce, loving and funny. She had a bank of knowledge that was daunting-- capable of anything. Her light was so bright, and now she is whole again; all her words come easy and her step is light.
Emma was preceded in death by her sister Lucille and brothers Robert and Charles, and her husband Joe. She is survived by her five children, Richard, Joe Bernard Jr., William, and Carolyn Mora and Melinda Carter, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear friend of 85 years, Gloria Theriac Villagomez.
