Elizabeth McNail

Elizabeth Josephine McNail Dow, a life-long resident of El Paso and retired teacher, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, June 6, 20110 following a brief illness. Born in Crystal City, Texas, Mrs. Dow spent her childhood in El Paso’s lower valley. She graduated from Ysleta High School in 1937 and from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1941. A devoted wife, mother, and educator. Mrs. Dow retired from them Ysleta Independent School District after 21 years of service. She taught Latin and Spanish at Eastwood High School from 1961 through 1974, and headed the Foreign Language department from 1971 through 1974. She later worked in the Central Office of YISD serving as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, Dr. J.M. Hanks, until her retirement in 1983. Mrs. Dow is fondly remembered by many of her former students at Eastwood, and served as the faculty sponsor of the Spanish Club and Latin Club during her tenure there. She was a active member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 40 years, having served as a lector and Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Dow was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Charles Dow Jr., also of El Paso, by her nephew Dallas Gary Smith, who was raised in the Dow family, and by two grandchildren, Eric Smith and Preston Dow. She is survived by her three sons, Eugene Charles Dow III of San Antonio, Texas, Noel Craig Dow of Arlington, Texas, and Max Eric Dow of Tyler, Texas, as well as 11 grandchildren and her close friend and companion, Mr. Al Hulbert of El Paso. Funeral arrangements are with Sunset Funeral Home, 750 N. Carolina Dr, El Paso, Texas 79915 (915) 594-4424, where family visitation will be from 6-8 pm Friday, June 11, 2010. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Grace United Methodist Church, 400 N. Carolina Dr. El Paso, Texas (915) 772-7481. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Methodist Church.
