Edith Marie Beckage passed away peacefully on March 18, 2022. She was 86. Born Edith Marie Franks on April 27, 1935, she weighed less than 4 pounds at birth, making her a fighter from the beginning. Edith was born into hardscrabble Scranton, Pennsylvania, and remained there until she met and married her high school sweetheart. She was loved by her extended family and friends but developed a particular love and respect for her maternal grandmother, Edith “Nanny” Franks, for whom she was named.
Edith ("Snooks") married Robert Beckage in 1953, in Aberdeen, Maryland. If a man’s home is his castle, Edith made it so for Bob. She was a master of sewing, gardening, cooking and baking, but for Edith, raising her family was a labor of love, not a chore. The family spent many years exploring the southwestern US in a small camper trailer every chance they could, their Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Smokey, included.
No one was a stranger in Edith’s life and she had a smile and a laugh that could light up a room. She was strict and disciplined, but kind and had a robust sense of humor; a great combination. Edith was often a “mother figure” to her children’s friends from school; she was a wonderful listener and adviser and had a memory for detail. Edith was always available to “debrief” after school, dates, and other events that were important to her family. She and Bob also helped Beverly during some critical years with Bev’s sons Ben and Clint, and as such, Edith had a very special relationship with her two oldest grandchildren.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Beverly Kelly, and her fiancé Luis Hernandez, and her sons, Ben (Ashley) and Clint (Aubrey) Kelly; her daughter Barbara Reid, and her son Stephen Klancher; her son, Bob Beckage and his wife, Martha, and their children Mitchell, Lauren, and Patrick; her brother-in-law Tom Beckage and his wife Beverly; two half-sisters and six great-grandchildren.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Beckage, and a grandson, Danny Klancher, 15, who died of cancer.
Edith’s friendships endured for decades, and she would support her friends through any crisis. Edith would want her friends and family to remember her legacy as her joy in her family and her love for the Lord.
