Dorothy Cox

June 8, 1927 — March 5, 2016

DOROTHY DAVIS COX went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the age of 88. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed. Dorothy was born on June 18, 1927, at Brooklyn Jewish Women’s Hospital. She was the fifth child of Samuel and Yetta Davis. After graduating from high school Dorothy’s adventurous spirit led her to West Palm Beach, FL where she met the love of her life, Cidney Cox, who was serving in the Army Air Corps. Dorothy joined Cidney in El Paso and they were married in Las Cruces, NM on May 15, 1947. While living in El Paso, she worked at White Sands, where she served as a secretary to Wernher von Braun and the U.S. government’s missile research projects. After returning from the Korean Conflict, Cidney accepted a position at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, where Dorothy worked in a secretarial position. Later, she enjoyed his assignment in Germany where she was able to be close to her daughter and grandchildren. Dorothy was a loyal wife, and devoted mother to her three beloved children; Sheryl, Judy, and Sanford. She volunteered as a den mother for Sanford’s Cub Scout Troop and she was a devoted caregiver to her daughter Judy for 53 years. To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren she was the unending source of hugs, “sugar,” silly songs, and cookies. Dorothy was best known by her friends for her love of bowling, knitting, and crocheting. She had a famous sense of humor and loved to tell jokes and sing songs to anyone she met. Her favorite times were spent playing bingo with her friends, going to the casino, or playing Yahtzee and solitaire. She was also a life-long fan of the Atlanta Braves, watching nearly every televised game and loyally participating in the “tomahawk chop.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Cidney Henry Cox, and daughter, Judy Beth Cox. She is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Cox Maxsom, son, Sanford Cidney Cox, grandchildren: Heather Michelle Denny, Amber Elizabeth Ordway, Krysta Marie Brethauer, Michael Cox, and 13 great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Memorial Pines Cemetery in Sunland Park, NM.
