Doris Steele

October 12, 1927 — March 5, 2016

Doris Steele, age 88, died March 5 after a long and happy life. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Tulsa with a degree in English. She received her librarian certification from the University of Oklahoma and her Masters Degree in Library Science from Texas Women's University. She and her husband moved with their young family to El Paso in 1963, when she began her long career as librarian at Parkland High School, retiring in 1998. Doris loved her sorority from her college days, Phi Mu, as well as her teachers sorority here in El Paso. She was an active member of Daughters of the King at her church for many years and a faithful member of her book group. Aside from her family, probably her greatest love was a good book! She also loved to travel and took many trips in the US and around the world. Doris was predeceased by her dear husband, James Steele, and beloved son Michael. She is survived by her children James Russell Steele and his girlfriend Connie Lopez of El Paso, Nancy Ashmore and her husband Richard of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Sally Sheffield and her husband Bob of Roanoke, TX, and Phillip Steele of El Paso, as well as her sister Jeanne Stunkard of Tulsa, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A Committal Service will be held at Fort Bliss cemetery March 29 at 1pm. All who knew her are welcome.
