Doris Jean Smith(Gunter), peacefully went into the arms of our Lord, on June 27, 2022. Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on February 23rd, 1932 to Grace and Andrew Gunter, she spent her formative years in Arkansas. At age 23, she married James Barton, a military man.
Doris worked as a dental assistant for private dentists and Civil Service as she raised her family in military communities mainly in El Paso and Japan. Doris had a tremendous impact on her family and friends. She had sage advice and was generous and gracious. A natural beauty, people could not believe her age as she grew older. Her love of art and creating art was a passion of hers and she made her home a place of beauty and comfort.
Doris is survived by her daughter Rebecca Diane Barton; son James R. Barton Jr; daughter-in-law Elisa Barton; step-sons/daughters Rick/Lisa Scannell, Rod/Teresa Scannell; Kerry/Jim Palermo; Kim/Skip Cooper; Kat Baker, six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 9:00am with a Funeral Service at 10:00am on Thursday, July 07,2022 at Sunset Funeral Service 4631 Hondo Pass Drive. Committal Service to follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, (West Shelter).
