Donald G. Litchfield, 82, of El Paso, Texas, passed away, Tuesday, October 9, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, October 19, 2012, at Western Hills United Methodist Church, 524 Thunderbird Drive, in El Paso, Texas. Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Litchfield and three children: Phyllis Lewis, Jeff Litchfield, and Kay Glancey; son-in-law Rick Glancey and four grandchildren: Megan Glancey, Cara Glancey, Ross Lewis, Millie Lewis; and sister-in-law Ruth Ann Litchfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Vera Litchfield, his sister Fanchon, and brothers Stanley and Calvin Litchfield. Don was born April 7, 1930 in Amarillo, Texas. He was a graduate of Clovis High School, Clovis, New Mexico. He earned a BBA in 1952 from the University of New Mexico. He was a member of the UNM Alumni Letterman’s Club and was a Football Letterman with the Lobos (’49, ’50, and ’51). Don was a member of the Pledge Class of the spring of 1950 of the Delta Zeta Chapter (New Mexico) of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Don served in the United States Air Force and Reserves from 1952 - 1957. Don married Barbara Ann Williams, of Lovington, New Mexico, on October 7, 1955 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Together they lived with their children in Albuquerque and Roswell, New Mexico, as well as Lubbock and El Paso, Texas. Don was a resident of Texas since 1967. Don entered the Property Casualty Insurance business in 1955 and the Surplus Lines Insurance business in 1974. He attained the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1974. In 1980, Don established Litchfield Special Risks, Inc., his own Surplus Lines Insurance Agency located in El Paso, Texas. He served as the president of the Texas Surplus Lines Association (1979-80) and president of the El Paso Chapter of CPCU twice. Don served as instructor and course leader for numerous CPCU courses and for Texas Agents’ Licensing courses and chairman of the Membership Committee of the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO). In January 1996, Don received the “James P. Elliott Award” for outstanding service the Insurance Industry from the El Paso Association of Insurance Agents. In April 1996, he sold Litchfield Special Risks, Inc. However, Don held an active insurance license with the State of Texas until 2009. The Litchfield family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Chesbro and Dr. Belgrave and all of the wonderful nurses and staff that cared for Don in his final days at Providence Hospital and at La Mariposa Hospice. Don loved to laugh, share words of wisdom and funny stories with friends and family. He was a teacher and supporter, a life-long learner, loving son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, grandfather, father and most of all - - husband. In a book that he left for his family and friends he wrote: This is not the end of the book; it’s just the end of a chapter, so “Keep Smilin’.” Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
