CW2(R) Rowland Smith, Decorated War Veteran, bravely succumbed to his most valiant battle with cancer and departed the world a hero 15 September 2008. ‘Chief’ will be remembered as a true patriot to his Country, his family and his Community. Recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Army Commendation Medals, he honored all Service Members. He was a member of VFW Post 812, 82nd Airborne, and was a past Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 393. He played an instrumental role in naming a section of El Paso’s Loop 375, Purple Heart Memorial Highway. He also served as an Allegan County, MI Deputy Sheriff, Police officer in Parchment, MI. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 Years, Jacqueline K. Smith, Sons: Douglas B. Smith (Michigan) George L. Smith (w. P. D’Anne) (El Paso), Grandchildren: SGT Anthony Marino (US Army), Dana M. Smith (MI), George L. Smith II, and Katelyn E. J. Smith. Sisters: Georgia (h. Darrell) Wills (FL), Wilma Jean Barcus (FL) Brothers: Stanley (OH) and Samuel (w. Diane)(AZ) and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by parents, General and Laura Smith, brothers, Evlan Bright, Sampson Smith, and Denver Smith. Visitation: Monday, 22 September 1700-2100 hrs and Prayer Service: 1900hrs at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass. Funeral Service: Tuesday, 23 September 1000 hrs at Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast, followed by Interment @ Fort Bliss National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
