Curtiss W. Garner was born on June 10, 1947 to Thomas and Margaret Pharr in Bessemer, Alabama. He went home to be with the LORD on Monday, December 24, 2012 at the age of 65. A long time resident of El Paso, he proudly served our country in the United States Army for 30 years. He graduated from all Army Noncommissioned Officer Education schools. He retired with the Legion of Merit for exemplary service to God, his country and family. Curtiss achieved the highest enlisted promotion to the rank of Sergeant Major. After his military retirement, he continued to serve his country working as a civil service employee for the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, responsible for the course materials to educate the Army’s Senior Noncommissioned Officer future Sergeant Majors. After retirement from civil service he enjoyed life with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by both his parents; brothers, Jack and Ronnie Essary and sister, Vicki Helton. He is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Petra Garner; son, Brandon; granddaughters Meagan Weeks and Jessica Garner; and great grandson Kayden Weeks; his mother-in-law, Elfriede Peplau; two brothers-in-law, Peter and Michael Peplau; and his sisters Faye Clabough(Mitch-Husband), Sandy Callahan (Kenny-Husband), Marsha Thompson (Harold-Husband) to include aunts, uncles, and numerous nephews, and nieces. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:30am with Funeral Services to begin at 11:30am, Friday, January 4, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Committal Services will begin at 1:00pm, Friday, January 4, 2013 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Humane Society.
