Christine N. Walker

Christine Walker, 81, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Ivory and Bessie Norwood and was a long-time resident of Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama, before moving to El Paso in 1986. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University and a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, she worked as an educator in Alabama for more than 30 years. Her positions included teacher, Teacher Corps supervisor, instructional specialist, principal and curriculum coordinator for Mobile County Public Schools. She subsequently taught for nine years in the Ysleta Independent School District. For many decades, Ms. Walker was a devoted member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the Tobin Park United Methodist Church, where she was very active until her death. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ola Mae Burrell, and survived by her son, Rev. Richard Walker III; daughter, Karol Parker; grandchildren, Julia Christine Walker and Richard Walker Parker; sisters, Helen Corley and Genevieve Waters; former husband, Rev. Richard Walker, Jr.; seven nieces, four nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation and reflection will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, at Tobin Park United Methodist Church, 5501 Wren, and immediately followed by a Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Polycystic Kidney Disease research through the PKD Foundation, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 400, Kansas City, MO 64114-3367.
