Christine Nwakaego Madubuko, 57, passed away at her home on November 7, 2023. She will be remembered as a loving and supportive wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many. Christine was born on December 4th, 1965, in Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria, to Rose and Joel Okoro. Her name, Nwakaego, means a child is greater than wealth, and as the second child in the family and the first daughter, her coming was especially precious. As the oldest daughter with a selfless and caring spirit, she was foundational for many of her younger siblings’ upbringings and adult lives. Christine attended Methodist Primary School in Lagos and then went to boarding school at Girls Secondary School in Umungasi, Aba, Abia State. After gaining admission into Lagoon School of Management Studies, she pursued secretarial studies prior to working at Silmac Nigeria Limited.
Christine and Kelechi Madubuko married on May 10, 1990. She arrived in the US in September 1992 and moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina two months later, where she would embark on a 25-year journey as an Army wife. During this journey, she welcomed two children: Kelechi O’Neal in 1993 and Jachike Craig in 1995. The Madubuko’s relocated multiple times, where Christine worked a variety of jobs. In Hawaii, she worked in the personnel department for the Navy Exchange. When they were stationed in Fort Hood, TX, she graduated summa cum laude from Central Texas College with an associate in applied science in Paralegal Studies.
Later, the military journey took her across the pond to Germany, where she was able to fulfill her love of children by working at the Wetzel Child Development Center as a caregiver. When the Madubuko’s transitioned to Alaska, Christine worked as a special assistant to the chief of the Human Resources Department for the Alaska Command. She also worked for the Brigade as an Administrative Assistant to the Commandant for the Primary Leadership Development Course. Her final duty station was El Paso, TX, where she worked as an Education Technician at Beaumont Hospital. Aside from the various Army duty stations, Christine traveled often with her family and visited many countries, including Spain, Japan, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and England.
Christine was known for her style and grace. She loved bright colors, especially purple; jewelry; and heels, and she was often the best dressed in any room she entered. A faithful servant of the Lord, she was active in the many church communities she was a part of over the years. Most recently, she served in the Children’s Nursery as well as the Hospitality Ministry at Hillcrest Baptist Church where she greeted and welcomed visitors and church members alike with a smile. She always loved children and jumped at opportunities to care for and be around them. Her many nieces and nephews enjoyed her patience, generosity, and kindness over the years and will deeply miss her calming and warm presence. Christine loved walking and often walked over 30,000 steps a day. On her walks, she enjoyed catching up with her loved ones. She will be remembered as a peaceful woman who was loved by all.
She is survived by her husband Kelechi Madubuko; her two children, KO and Jachike Madubuko; her siblings Ifeanyi (Uche) Okoro, Ijeoma (Nd) Chukwu, Joy (Gabriel) Ndubuisi, Chima (Lizzy) Okoro, Chizo (Christian) Asoluka, Onyegbula Okoro, Onyemachi Okoro, Chinedu Okoro, and Chinwendu Okoro; and her sister-in-law, Julie Okoro. She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Ugochukwu, Uchechi, Ulunma, Odimara, and Ogechi Okoro. Christine had endless amounts of love to give and the people she interacted with felt as much. May she rest peacefully as she will be missed dearly.
