Charles Richard Monroe

July 11, 1931 — October 26, 2011

There was never a man more proud to serve his country than Charles Richard Monroe, Sr. Born July 11, 1931 in Charlottesville, Virginia, Charles (“Charlie”) passed away Oct. 26, 2011. He began his Army career at the tender age of 17 as a tank gunner with the 63rd Heavy Tank Battalion. The Army allowed him to travel around the world. While stationed in Germany, he met the love of his life, and in 1951 he and Helga married. Together they raised three children. Charles also served in Vietnam in 1966 and received the Bronze Star medal for his meritorious service. Prior to his service in Vietnam, Charlie served two tours of duty in Germany and was there during Operation Big Lift. From 1963 to 1966 he was on the teaching staff at New York University. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1969 and made El Paso his home. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 59 years, Helga, his eldest son Charles, Jr. of Portland, Oregon, son Michael and daughter-in-law Patricia of El Paso, and daughter Patricia of El Paso. Also remembering him are his grandchildren Christine, Carolyn, Michael, Jr., and Bryan, as well as five great grandchildren. He will also be remembered fondly by his relatives in Germany. Our special thanks to Raul Moreno who has helped us through this difficult time. Charlie never met a stranger, so there are many friends who will also cherish knowing him. He loved his faithful dog Maggie, his Dallas Cowboys and any movie starring John Wayne. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed but he will never be forgotten. Visitation will take place Tuesday, November 1, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Committal Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Please visit on-line register book at www.sunsetfuneralhomes.net
