Charlene Watkins Green

Charlene Watkins Green passed away at her home in El Paso on Friday, December 29. A beautiful and talented community leader, Charlene was born in Deming, New Mexico and was a life-long resident of El Paso, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence Ament Watkins, founder of the El Paso Junior Woman's Club and the Arts and Letters Societies of El Paso, Austin, and Honolulu, Hawaii, and Sam Watkins, an early New Mexico rancher, businessman, and automobile dealer, and her sister Florence Watkins Johnston who is survived by her husband J.H.E. Johnston of Santa Fe, NM. Charlene was educated at Radford School for Girls and The National Park Seminary in Washington, DC. She was honored as the third Sun Queen of the Southwestern Sun Carnival in 1938. She was a member of the El Paso Junior League, El Paso Symphony Association, Pan American Round Table, and chairperson of the Sun Carnival Queen's Court. She worked for the Popular Stores as a model, fashion consultant, and buyer. Her many interests included playing bridge, gardening, reading, needlework, and raising dachshunds. Mrs. Green is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Granville "Bill" Green, her daughters Martha Green Quirk of Elsah, Illinois and Gretchen Green Love and her husband James Wallace Love of El Paso, and her grandson Christopher Green Love of El Paso, and her granddaughter Jennifer Watkins Quirk McLaughlin and her husband Abraham McLaughlin of Boston, Massachusetts. A special thank you goes to Charlene's loving, dedicated and patient caregivers, Emma Melendez, Lulu Jacobs, and Alice Cordova who helped make her last months so peaceful. Thanks to the VNA Hospice Organization for their loving care. A service to celebrate the life of Charlene Green will be held at The Pro-Cathedral Church of St. Clement, Reverend Bill Francis officiating, on Friday, January 5,2007 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the Mayfield Room. The church is located on the corner of Montana and Campbell streets. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made on behalf of Mrs. Green to St. Clement's School, 600 Montana, El Paso, Texas 79902 or Principia College, Office of the President, Elsah, Illinois 62028 or VNA Hospice, 4141 N.
