Our beautiful mother and matriarch, Carmen Haddox, passed away on February 22, 2024, after a brief illness. Born on November 18, 1929, to Dr. Hermilo Mendoza and Maria de Jesus Perez Mendoza, she grew up in El Paso and graduated from El Paso High School and Texas Western College with a Bachelor of Science degree. While working at the El Paso Public Library to pay for college, she met the love of her life, John H. Haddox. After getting married, Carmen and John lived in South Bend, IN, where he finished his PhD, and she was the Executive Secretary for the Department of Mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. She and John returned to El Paso where they raised their eleven children. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of sixty-three years, John, her daughter, Margaret, and her sons, Thomas and Richard. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Christina Huber, John Haddox, Jr. (Elizabeth), Charles Haddox (Lizabeth), Raissa DeGraw (Colin), Grace Haddox (Basilio), Madeleine Haddox, Robert Haddox (Karissa), Timothy Haddox (Daniela), her grandchildren, Mark (Brenda), Ian (Laura), Stuart (Wendy), Nicholas, Haddox (Peter), Roy, Nicole (John), Jacob, Colin, Hudson, and great-grandchildren, Sofia, Olivia, Luna, Nina, Kaiya, Johnny, Alexander, Natalie, and Logan. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Mendoza and many nieces and nephews. Her children were her world, and she would do anything for them. She was always more concerned about others than she was for herself. She shared her Catholic faith with them, as well as her love of learning and spirit of service to others. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, and gardener. In her later years, she traveled extensively throughout Europe with her husband and several of her children. Carmen leaves behind a legacy of strength, wisdom, and compassion. She was much beloved, the heart and soul of the family, and will be forever missed! A special thank you to Father Henry Beck for his spiritual guidance and friendship in her later years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Haddox Endowment for Excellence in Philosophy at UTEP, The University of Texas at El Paso, Office of Institutional Advancement, Mike Loya Building, Suite 223, 500 W University Avenue, El Paso, TX 79902-9900. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, March 11, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Church 3729 Hueco Ave, El Paso, TX 79903.
