Carmen B. Gonzalez

February 15, 1927 — September 29, 2020

Carmen B. Gonzalez, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, entering the hands of her Lord and Savior. Carmen was born in Juarez, Mexico on February 15, 1927, and became a United States Citizen on June 11, 1956. Carmen was a proud Bowie Bear, Class of 1945, and part of their alumni association. Her school pride was nothing short of contagious towards her peers. As evidenced by her favorite song, We’re Loyal to you, Bowie High. She truly lived by the quote, “Once a Bear, always a Bear.” Carmen met the love of her life, Saturnino (Nino) F. Gonzalez, throughout her school years. At the age of 18, they married and had just celebrated their 75th anniversary on June 24, 2020. When Carmen’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Carmen was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Later in life, she helped her husband's business succeed, that he successfully owned for over 50 years, as a bookkeeper and office manager. No matter what the circumstances were, she consistently showed loyalty, care, and devotion towards her husband. As life continued, their favorite form of entertainment was at Sunland Park Casino and Speaking Rock Casino. We always had the joke, that it was their second home. The blaring sound of slot machines and the flashing lights was an atmosphere that brought them true joy. Carmen is preceded in death by her daughter, Dolores (Lali) Boudreaux, and adopted step-sister Livia McKee Bowker. She leaves behind her husband of 75 years, Nino, sons; Saturnino (Nino) Gonzalez, Jr. (Patricia) and Enrique Gonzalez (Maria), grandchildren; Leo Gonzalez, Christie G. Slater (Mike), Lisa G. Smith (Mike), Alicia G. Pevahouse (Matt), Nina Isturis, and Chloe Pina, and great grandchildren; Elayna Whitley, Ethan Gonzalez, Adam Slater, and Sienna Nicole Pevahouse. A Visitation will be held for Carmen on Friday, October 2, 2020 from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. with the Rosary at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Homes- East, 750 N. Carolina Drive. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery East at 2:30 p.m.
