Blanca Aguiar Cobos

September 14, 1920 — September 8, 2012

On September 1, 2012 Victor Manuel Cobos, a long-time resident of El Paso, passed away at the age of 94. On September 8, 2012 Blanca Georgina Cobos, his wife of over 70 years, at age 92, joined him. During their seven decades together they saw the world change in many ways. He graduated in 1942 as a mining engineer from the Texas College of Mines (now UTEP) and immediately upon graduation married Blanca and began working with Robert E. McKee Construction Company. They moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he was instrumental in the construction of many well-known buildings, including the New Mexico state capitol, the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the New Mexico State Penitentiary, among others. During this era, he briefly worked as a mining engineer for ASARCO in Chihuahua, Mexico. Upon their return to El Paso in 1959, Victor continued on many government and local projects with McKee, to include the Federal Reserve Bank of El Paso, the Rocket Sled Project at White Sands, the first airport expansion, the Greyhound bus station downtown, and the Coca Cola bottling company, to name a few. He then became a custom homebuilder. Blanca was busy rearing their four children. She served as Cub Scout den mother and began a 40-year relationship with her Canasta club members. Blanca’s and Victor’s dedication to and respect for each other have served as a positive example to their children, as well as extended family members. Blanca and Victor later were the longtime proprietors of Desierto Leather from the late 60’s to the mid 90’s, where they formed many long lasting friendships with many El Pasoans. Victor and Blanca were preceded in death by their son Victor, Jr., their grandson Victor III, Blanca’s sister, Maria Luisa Munoz, and Victor’s brother Oscar. They are survived by their children, Charles Cobos (Jane) of Bryan, Texas, Sylvia Cobos Lieshoff (William) of Louisville, Kentucky, David Cobos (Susan) of El Paso, and eleven grandchildren living in El Paso, Pullman, WA, San Antonio, Chicago, Houston, Wilson, NC, and Washington, DC. Blanca and Victor are also survived by 16 great-grant children and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6:00-9:00 pm, Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home-West with a Memorial Service at 7:00 pm. A very special note of thanks and appreciation is extended to the caring staff at the Regency Assisted Living Residence and the staff at Hospice El Paso.
