Betty Florence Black, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend entered into eternal rest on October 13, 2023 at age 78.
Betty was born to George and Florence Brunner on September 14, 1945 in El Paso, Texas. She graduated from Austin High School in 1963 and went on to attend the University of Texas at El Paso. While in college, she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and was a Sun Carnival Duchess in 1963-1964.
After graduating from UTEP, Betty taught in the El Paso Independent School District for 28 years at Newman, Hillside, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Zach White Elementary schools. She was named Teacher of Year at Newman Elementary in 1973-1974, and at Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary in 1989-1990. Betty loved teaching and sharing her passion for learning with thousands of children over the years.
Betty was an avid reader, gardener, and loved arts and crafts. She was member of P.E.O. International and Delta Kappa Gamma and volunteered for both organizations in her spare time.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; George Newcomb Brunner and Florence Grosheider Brunner. She is survived by her husband of 50 years; Johnny M. Black, her sons; Carl Black (Michelle) and John Black (Julie), grandchildren; Mason Black, Griffin Black, Ashlyn Black, Owen Black, and Elise Black, and her brother; George Brunner Jr. She is also survived by many extended family and friends to cherish and honor her memory.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 5:00pm on Sunday, November 05, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Homes-West.
