Bettie V. Evans

Elizabeth (Bettie) V. Evans passed away on September 30, 2007 after a short illness. She was born October 4, 1940 in Panama, the second child of Dr. Winston Hunter Vaughan, Jr. and Dorothy Chandler Vaughan. As a result of her father’s military service, Bettie moved frequently as a child, living in Panama, Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, Massachusetts, Japan and Okinawa. She eventually settled with her family in El Paso, where she graduated from Austin High School in 1958. Bettie attended Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College in Tennessee. Beloved mother, sister, aunt and grandmother, Bettie had a servant’s heart. She dedicated much of her time to the El Paso Public Library and donated regularly to numerous charities. She loved helping others, painting and spending time with family, especially her grandson Aidan. She was preceded in death by son Pete Nance Evans, and sister Eloise “Sissie” Vaughan. Bettie is survived by sisters Margaret “Bobbie” Vaughan and Dorothy “Dottie” Vaughan, daughter Marie Evans Schumacher, son-in-law Eric Hume Schumacher, grandson Aidan Frederick Schumacher and nephew James Matt Harvie, Jr. Memorial contributions can be made to LULAC Project Amistad, 310 N. Mesa St., #520, 915.532.3415. Memorial services shall take place Oct. 13 at 11am at Sunset Funeral Home-West.
