Bernardo “Bernie” Ortiz, 82 years old, passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2012. He served in the Korean War abroad the USS Missouri. He served as governor of the Tigua Indian Tribe in 1978-1979. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for the U.S. Department of Justice Immigration and Naturalization, where he later retired after 25 years of service. Bernardo loved carpentry, painting, drawing and loved playing softball. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 54 years, Elisa N. Ortiz; 4 sons: Adolfo Ortiz, Lorenzo Ortiz, Martin Ortiz and Ramon Ortiz; daughter, Carmen Enriquez; brothers: Rodolfo Ortiz and Armando Ortiz; sister, Margarita Jurado; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m., with a Vigil to begin at 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 8, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home-East, 750 N. Carolina Dr. Funeral Mass will be said at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Santa Lucia Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-East.
