Bernarda L. Quintana

Bernarda “Mamá Yita” L. Quintana, 96, of El Paso, Texas, passed away on October 23, 2023.

She was born on August 21, 1927 in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, where she loved to ride bikes, play baseball, and to be of service to her family; also evident in her kindergarten teaching position at Casa Hogar. Later in life, she enjoyed working on Word Search puzzles and watching telenovelas. Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she lived to care for and nurture those around her. It is common to hear that she was a second mother to many. Mamá Yita would get a sparkle in her eye when in the company of her 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Words do not capture the profound effect she had on her family and the generations that will carry her with them.   

Bernarda is preceded in death by her husband, Fortino S. Quintana, and parents, Adolfo and Rosario Lazcano. She is survived by her son, Manuel Perea, and daughters: Carolina Bitar, Edna Marshall, and Rosa Regier. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Roberto Perea, Yazmin Lazcano-Pry, Erika Bitar, Abraham Bitar, Jessica N. McKinney, David Amador, Jennifer Stetson, and Giselle Regier. As well as nine great-grandchildren: Nikolai Perea, Dante Stetson, Arlo Lazcano-Pry, Oriana Lazcano-Pry, Eva Bitar, Izak Lazcano-Pry, Olivia McKinney, Kol Stetson, and Jordan McKinney.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Homes - East, 750 N. Carolina. A Eulogy will be held at 8:30 AM, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Sunset Funeral Homes - East. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson.
