Barbara Ann Spruill

December 19, 1941 — February 16, 2022

Barbara Ann Spruill passed away on February 16, 2022 following a lengthy illness. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 19, 1941 to Michael and Vera Mate, Barbara grew up in Cleveland and graduated from St Peter High School in 1959 as the President of her Senior Class. Following graduation, she worked at a local bank and in 1961 she married then Private Wade Spruill. Barbara was a dedicated Army spouse throughout Wade’s 20-year career and following his retirement from the Army, the family remained in El Paso. Barbara worked at the Ft Bliss Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) before resuming her banking career at the El Paso National Bank (which subsequently became Texas Commerce Bank and is now Chase Bank, Downtown El Paso). Barbara thoroughly enjoyed banking and served in multiple positions rising thru the ranks to become a Vice President (Real Estate), a position she held until retiring in January 2002. Following Wade’s passing, Barbara joined the Desert Sun Chapter 30, Society of Military Widows (SMW) and served as Treasurer of this distinguished organization dedicated to the spouses and survivors of America’s military men and women. Barbara was preceded in death by SSG (USA, Ret) Wade Spruill, her husband of over 50 years as well as both her parents and her brother Thomas Mate. She is survived by her daughter Diana and her husband Colonel (USAF, Ret) Steve Barrett of El Paso, TX; her daughter Rebecca Spruill of El Paso, TX; her Grandsons James Wade Barrett of Mount Sterling, KY and Nathan Wade Spruill of El Paso, TX; her sister-in-law Jacqueline Mate of Hickory, NC, extended in-law family in the Virginia Beach VA and Elizabeth City NC areas as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. The extended Spruill family expresses their deepest appreciation to Jasmine, Juan Carlos, Lily, and the Alegre Home Health Care team and to Maria, Dani, Laura, Vanessa, and the entire Kindred Hospice-El Paso staff for their very caring and compassionate support. Visitation will be at Sunset Funeral Home (Northeast) from 5:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday March 2, 2022, with a Rosary at 6:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sunset Funeral Home (Northeast) on Thursday Mar 3, 2022 at 9:30 AM followed by Burial Services at the Ft Bliss National Cemetery at 10:30 AM.
