Barbara Davis Hayes was born on November 10, 1925, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Oliver E. and Ruth T. Davis. Barbara worked as a dressmaker and a secretary to make ends meet. She also drove a two-and-a-half-ton truck in the Army Motor Pool and loved pulling up next to cadets to ask them if they wanted a ride. In 1947 she met Bob Hayes at the Playmore Dance Hall in Kansas City. His suave dance moves and devilish good looks made her instantly fall in love, and on November 7, 1949, they married and moved to Whittier, Alaska, where Bob served as the only dentist at Fort Sullivan. They came to El Paso in 1952 when he was transferred and put in charge of the Logan Heights Dental Clinic and subsequently practiced dentistry until 1985.
Barbara’s three children, Harold Hayes III (deceased), Susan Kathleen Hayes, and Heidi Elizabeth Hayes were her pride and joy, as were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a true matriarch. Steely and subversive, she bore the weight of life’s regular disappointments and extraordinary tragedies with grace, wit, and a wry sense of humor. She was known to giggle in the midst of heated arguments and enjoy off-color jokes. She loved diamonds, and getting her hair done, and (oddly enough) the Village Inn. She was also a very accomplished pianist and frequently snuck off to the piano to calm her nerves. A member of Trinity First United Methodist Church for over 60 years, she noted that it was only recently that her relationship with Jesus took full bloom.
Barbara went to be with Christ on June 7th, 2021. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 24th, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home – West https://www.sunsetfuneralhomes.net/
