Barbara Jo Becker

Barbara Jo Becker (Allsup), 89, of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2025. Born on March 14, 1936, in McAlister, Oklahoma, to Opie Reed and Thelma Jo Allsup, Barbara lived a life marked by dedication, music, and love for her family and students.

Barbara grew up in McAlister alongside her brother, Jerry Reed Allsup. She pursued her passion for learning, graduating from McAlister High School and earning degrees from Wilburton College, Oklahoma Baptist University, and a Master’s degree in Education, Piano, and Organ from the University of Oklahoma. Her career as an educator took her to Clearwater, Kansas; La Mesa, New Mexico; Fort Worth, Texas; and El Paso, Texas, where she touched countless lives as a beloved teacher. Her excellence in teaching was recognized when she was named EPISD Teacher of the Year.

In Las Cruces, New Mexico, Barbara met her future husband, Dale H. Becker. They married on August 30, 1968, at Second Baptist Church in McAlister, Oklahoma, and settled in El Paso in 1969. Together, they raised two children, Patricia Jo (Paul) Johnson and Christopher Dale (Michele) Becker. Barbara’s devotion to her family extended to her grandchildren, Paige and Paxton Johnson, and Annie Becker, whom she cherished deeply.

Music was a cornerstone of Barbara’s life. She served as an organist for numerous churches throughout her career, sharing her talent and faith through her performances. After retiring from the El Paso Independent School District in June 2000, Barbara embraced her love of travel, exploring many foreign countries and creating cherished memories.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, 4631 Hondo Pass, El Paso, TX 79904.

Barbara’s legacy of kindness, education, and music will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
