Armin Julius Mayr

Armin Julius Mayr, Ph.D., retired Professor of Chemistry at the El Paso Community College, a long-time member of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, passed away on November 4, 2016 in El Paso, Texas at age 70. He is survived by his wife, Shu-Yuan, brother Ulrich, sister Barbara, and son Misha. Dr. Mayr was born in Ansbach, Germany, and received his education and Ph. D. in Chemistry from the Universities of Würzburg and Regensburg. He came to America initially to conduct chemical research at New Mexico State University and the University of Texas at El Paso. After a brief career as an industrial chemist in New Jersey, he returned to the Southwest, a region that he had grown to love. In addition to his teaching, Armin maintained an active connection with research and more importantly developed a separate persona as a talented cellist. He had a decades-long performance career with the El Paso and Las Cruces Symphony Orchestras, as well as the El Paso Opera, ProMusica, and BNC. He also regularly participated in various chamber and chamber orchestra concerts. Armin was a gentle, creative spirit who, by virtue of his diverse talents in art and science, brought together in friendship a wide variety of personalities. He will remain with us as the subject of many loving thoughts and conversations related to his smile, his talent, and the love he bestowed upon us all. A Memorial Service will be held for Armin from 5:30pm-7:30pm on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home-West at 480 N. Resler Dr. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home West.
