Antonio “Opa” Haniu Untalan , 71 passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2016.
Opa was born in Agana, Guam on October 22, 1945 to Jose and Josefina Untalan. He was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Father Duenas Memorial High School and then left to serve his country proudly in the United States Army. He rose to the rank of Sergeant Major and proudly served 27 years. His career encompassed two tours to Vietnam and assignments all over the world. The assignments included Vietnam; Fort Benning, Georgia; Pirmasens, Germany; Kaiserlautern, Germany; Darmstadt, Germany; Guam; Mannheim, Germany; El Paso, Texas; and Nurnberg, Germany. While serving, he received numerous awards and ribbons. Some awards included: Meritorious Service Medal, 3rd award; Army Accommodation Medal, 1st award; Army Achievement Medal, 3rd award; National Defense Service Medal, 3rd award; Army Good Conduct Medal 8th award. In 1971 Opa was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Helga Ihle.
As a boy Opa played on the local little league team. His love of baseball continued as he played on community teams throughout his military career. As an adult Opa enjoyed bowling, barbecuing, and fishing. He enjoyed sharing his hobbies with family and friends. One of his favorite pastimes was rooting for his beloved San Francisco 49ers. He enjoyed everything and anything that had to do with the 49ers. His latest interest was hearing how family members were conquering life via new technology such as Facebook and Skype. The day Opa learned about Facebook video chat he and Oma spent several hours connecting with family and old friends around the world.
Opa was preceded in death by his parents; Jose and Josefina Untalan; three brothers and one sister. Opa is survived by his wife of 45 years Helga Untalan; sisters; Priscilla U. Mesa and Carmelita U. Camacho; children; Maria Dillbeck, Monica Taylor, Tony Untalan; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Gathering of Remembrance from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM with a Vigil/Rosary at 7:00 PM Monday, November 21, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Scripture Service at 9:30 AM Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Interment at 11:00 AM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
