Alexander (Alex) J. Berta

April 21, 1928 — December 12, 2007

Alexander (Alex) J. Berta passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on December 12, 2007, after a brief illness. Born April 21, 1928, to Jennie Sartoris Berta and Peter Berta. Alex grew up in Rockvale and Pueblo, Colorado, sleeping in the family kitchen until he graduated from high school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served honorably and turned down an appointment to Annapolis to pursue a degree from the University of Colorado. Alex’s banking career began in the 1960’s in Colorado as a teller. He relocated to El Paso in 1970 and ultimately retired as an executive vice president from State National Bank. After retiring from the banking industry Alex and his wife Velia owned and operated a temporary staffing franchise and later founded The Job Connection which he owned and operated until his death. Alex, however, always knew that people were more important than business and he fully appreciated the blessings that God gave him in being a part of a loving, extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Rudy Roman. He is survived by his beloved wife, Velia; his son, John Berta; and his daughters Renee Berta, Alexis Berta, Monica Moreno, Diana Moreno, Andrea Berta and her husband Joseph Palafox, Christine Moreno-Lujan and her husband David Lujan. Other survivors include his grandchildren Amanda Saenz, Steven Loera, Brittany Jaso, Samantha Jaso, and Hayley Palafox. Visitation to be held Sunday, December 16th at Sunset Funeral Home (4631 Hondo Pass) from 5:00-9:00 p.m. with recitation of the Vigil/Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be held December 17th at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (9025 Diana) at 12:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gilbert Lucero, Raymond Lucero, Steven Loera, David Lujan, Ralph Aguilera and Raul Salcido. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Homes-Northeast.
